We wanted to share our Woman of the Week here at Jacana books.
It is none other than the indomitable Serena Williams. Serena Jameka Williams is an American professional tennis player. The Women’s Tennis Association ranked her world No 1 in singles on eight seperate occasions between 2002 and 2017. She reached No.1 ranking for the first time in 2002 sixteen years ago. She married Alexis Ohanian, co- founder of Reddit in a fairy tale wedding last November. When you think about Serena Williams, you think strong, black and sexy. Her independent clothing line called aneres is availabe at serenawilliams.com. ‘ Her values are amplified with this quote from her website: “Every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’re strongest when we cheer each other on”.
Last week, the French Open President Bernard Guidicelli in a statement with racial overtones, said of the black catsuit Williams had won in the match was disrespectful to the game. He said “Serena’s outfit this year, for example would not longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place”.
Many commentators wondered what part of her all black wakanda inspired ensemble was disrespectful? Nike joined the conversation saying on Twitter ” You can take the superhero out of her costume but you can never take away her superpowers.#justdoit.
A week later, Williams won the first US open match in a tutu which was designed by Louis Vuitton’s Virgil Abloh. A Facebook observer commented ‘I love it. I love love love love it. I also love that Louis Vuitton and Nike were both like, “You want petty? We got you Serena.”
Williams was back for the first time to the U.S Open Competition this week since 2016 when she left to give birth to her daughter. She will be playing her big sister Venus later on in the tournament, various news sources have confirmed.
Following Serena Williams journey as a mum, businesswoman and athlete is very inspiring as well. Lets take a look at some of the qualites we admire about her in her recent tweets on Twitter. In the first and second tweets, she is talking to mothers on Twitter. In the third and fourth tweet, we see the activist, motivator and all round strong black woman.
“This mama eats with her left hand and feeds Olympia with my right. I usually finish my food in 4.7 seconds but somehow I end up just as dirty as my daughter. I’m still trying to master this.”
“This line is for queens everywhere: it takes both grace and strength to own all that you are and never settle with having to choose so let’s own it, declare it and let the world watch us conquer.”
“If you don’t dare to try and chase your dreams, you’ll rob yourself the joy of doing it. Don’t just dream it. #just do it”.
“Black women are paid 38% less than white men!!! I support equal pay because #38percentcounts”.
This was the most touching tweet. It is dated 16th of July 2018: “these past two weeks was a sound for all moms stay home at working. You can do it you really can! I am not better or different than any of you. Your support has meant so much to me. Let’s keep making noise everyday in everything we do.#roadtoUSOpen.
We would be cheering our #superhero here at #Jacanabooks at the #USOpen.
