"You get in life what you have the courage to ask for." Oprah Winfrey
Canadian singer-songwriter, producer and actress Jully Black is JacanaBooks woman of the month. Born to Jamaican immigrant parents, the youngest of seven children, Black grew up in the Jane and Finch area of Toronto, Ontario. She was named as one of 'The 25 Greatest Canadian Singers Ever'. CBC Music dubbed her Canada's Queen of R&B and Soul. A platinum-selling recording artist, Black's music career yielded multiple singles reaching the Top 10 pop, R&B and dance music charts. She won Juno and Gemini Awards and was selected to sing for her Royal Highness, Elizabeth II, Queen of England.
Not scared to speak against racism and sexual abuse, Jully defended herself and women through her forthrightness and boldness in a media series #FirstTimeIwasCalled. A superstar in her own right, Black has shared the stage with superstars such as Kanye West, Celine Dion, Elton John, Sean Paul to name just a few. A former host of CTV's etalk, Black was chosen to interview Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z and former President Bill Clinton. Co-founder of the women empowerment summit, Empowered in my Skin, Black just concluded the second anniversary of her epic annual program with a sold-out weekend filled with seminars, talks and workshops.
The just-concluded event tagged 'The Emotional and Financial Fitness Weekend' held Friday 16th November through to Sunday 18th November at the Toronto Don Valley Hotel. The event was the culmination of the work Black and her co-founder friend Nkechi Mwafor-Robinson put into it to revive men and women, their finances and mental health. Their unified mission seeks to help people identify and lock into their custom combination of abilities and capabilities that form the uniqueness and power of their S.H.A.P.E: Spirituality, Health, Abilities, Personality and Experiences.
We think Jully Black is a phenomenal woman in every way. We hope you think so too.
