Tope Oriola is an Associate Professor of Criminology and Socio-legal studies at the University of Alberta. He is the Joint Editor in Chief at the African Security Journal. According to the University of Alberta website, his research scope is transnational in scope and focusses on three main foci: (1) resource conflicts and concomitant “governmental crimes” (2) use of force and weaponization of the police and (3) terrorism studies.
Jacanabooks.ca was able to get his thoughts on a number of issues including life in Edmonton as an immigrant, poverty in Edmonton and the loss of his dear friend, Prof Pius Adesanmi. A public intellectual, Prof Oriola contributes regularly to Sahara Reporters, Premium Times amongst other international media through op-eds, media interviews and expert opinions.
